Insurance giant IAG has been named as the company with Australia’s best workplace giving and corporate social responsibility policies, according to a survey conducted by volunteer-matching social enterprise GoodCompany.

The ‘Best Workplaces to Give Back’ survey asked companies across a range of sectors about their internal practices around workplace volunteering, payroll giving and community-based sponsorships.

They were also asked about CSR commitments across a range of social and environmental areas such as diversity, reconciliation action plans, green energy targets and recycling programs.

The aim of the survey was to encourage more companies to adopt innovative community-focused policies by recognising businesses that are leading the way in this area.

Each company was  ranked based on three criteria: the size of its workplace giving or CSR programs, the broader context in which the programs were running and the unique social innovations adopted by the business.

IAG led the pack, with Origin, NAB, Westpac and Optus rounding out the top five spots in the survey. Each of the top five companies have demonstrated a strong commitment to volunteering, payroll giving, fundraising, sponsorship and other social initiatives.

Of the top 40 companies on the list, 88% offer paid volunteer leave, with 61.4% of the companies offering a budget to support volunteering. While the majority (65.9%) give employees a single day to volunteer, 21% offer two or more days.

Additionally, almost two-thirds (64%) of the top 40 companies offer payroll giving, with 81.2% matching the employees’ donations to some level and 15% offering uncapped matched giving.

GoodCompany CEO Ash Rosshandler said that he hopes that the ‘Best Workplaces to Give Back Index’ becomes an important accolade for companies to vie for, tapping into the natural competitiveness of Australian companies.

“We believe that this can become a real indicator of a company’s success. Just as their yearly profits are viewed as a success measure, so too will their focus on contributing to the community around them,” Rosshandler said.

The survey is also intended to provide a guide to nonprofits looking to partner with businesses that are receptive to their social mission, and to make it easier for potential employees to find a workplaces that share their social values.

“Many professionals are looking for workplaces with meaning. But it’s not easy to find out which companies share the same values as they do. They are keen to give back to communities that they feel passionate about,” Rosshandler said.

“We want charities to learn which companies can support them and in what ways. As GoodCompany works with over half of the companies listed, we also hope charities will contact us to see how we can best connect them to these companies to meet their funding, volunteering and sponsorship needs. It’s encouraging to see how important giving back to those in need has become to companies of all shapes and sizes in Australia.”
